BIS Certification: What Exporters Need to Know

For exporters aiming to access the Indian market, BIS certification is essential for certain regulated products. It ensures compliance with Indian standards, similar to KS in Korea or CE in the EU, and provides assurance of safety and quality to Indian consumers. Below is a practical guide to help manufacturers navigate BIS requirements effectively.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s national standards body

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s national standards body responsible for developing and implementing quality, safety, and performance standards across various products. Similar to KS (Korean Standards) in South Korea or CE marking in the European Union, BIS certification ensures that products meet Indian regulatory requirements for safety and quality. It is mandatory for certain product categories imported, manufactured, or sold in India.

BIS certification is critical for businesses aiming to access the Indian market, ensuring both compliance and customer trust.

As a reminder to all stakeholders, the Quality Control Orders (QCOs) issued by the respective Ministries or Departments of the Government of India will be enforced from the specified dates for each product.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has provided the official list of these QCOs, which is available on their website. Customs specialists are advised to review these requirements to ensure compliance during import/export processes and to facilitate smooth clearance operations.

Case Study

Let’s consider an example of scheme matching with its corresponding reasons and, most importantly, the effective date for mandatory certification. This helps clarify compliance requirements and timelines for each product category.

BIS Scheme Matching.png

BIS certification is mandatory for safety-critical products like steel wire ropes (already enforced) and cranes (mandatory by August 28, 2025, under Scheme I). Electronics like smartphones require registration under Scheme II, while footwear components remain optional. Compliance ensures market access and adherence to India’s safety and quality standards.

Types of BIS Certification

ISI Mark:

  • The ISI (Indian Standards Institution) mark is a quality certification mark granted by BIS, required for most manufactured products.

  • Examples: Electronics, construction materials, etc.

CRS Certification (Compulsory Registration Scheme):

  • Primarily applies to electronic products, where certain categories must be registered according to BIS standards.

  • Examples: Smartphones, LED lamps, power adapters, etc.

FMCS Certification (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme):

  • Required for foreign manufacturers exporting products to the Indian market to ensure compliance with BIS standards.
